"This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all." - 1 John 1:5
We can't really understand what it means that God is light. We know he is completely pure, without any of the shadows we carry with us. We can see his effect on people as he warms them and gives them life. But some parts of God are just a mystery. Are you OK with living in that mystery, or are you ready for more?
"Don't you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey?" - Romans 6:16a
You don't have to let your situation choose how you feel about life. People have suffered through countless problems and remained unshaken. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, torture survivor of the holocaust, wrote, "the life of faith is nothing if not an unending struggle of the spirit." It's true. Life can be a struggle, but we get to choose how to respond to life.
How are you choosing?
"Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever."
- Psalm 125:1
Trust changes people. Some people trust in things that will eventually fail them, like their image, or clothes, or even friends. Others put their trust in God, who never fails us. Those people aren't shaken by life's problems.
"I took my troubles to the LORD, I cried out to him and he answered my prayer." - Psalm 120
When life is tough and it seems like we're drowning, we have something we can still do for help. We can call out to God. He wants to hear our problems, but still, he can do something about them. Is there anything you need help with right now? Call out.
"Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth."
- Psalm 50:2
Every culture celebrates beauty in the same ways. Sunsets, scenic views, people smiling, they all point to something we have in common. God created and perfected beauty. It's possible to think of beauty and not think of God, but it's impossible to think of beauty apart from God because he created it all. Take some time to recognize the beauty around you. Lose yourself in what God made.
"But even before I was born, God chose me and called me by his marvelous grace. Then it pleased him." - Galatians 1:15
We all like to be chosen. It points to something about us that's cherished and special. God chose you. He chose you before you did anything noteworthy before anyone else had even seen you. That makes you important to him. Are you living like God's chosen person today?
"Forever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God." - Romans 1:20
God paints masterpieces every day. Take some time to slow down. Look at the Creator's canvas. Is it possible that this one view was created just for you? Viewing art doesn't point to an object that was captured with paint, it points to the artist.
"Pray without ceasing." - 1 Thessalonians 5:17
It's easy to try this at certain points in the day. Praying as we close off at night or early in the morning isn't hard. It's in those moments we really need prayer that we find resistance. Like when we are about to respond to someone in anger or are frustrated with a friend. At your most challenging moment today, try to remember to stop and pray. You'll be changed.
"Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." - Ephesians 4:32
Anyone can give a fake smile. Kindness is more about trying your best to understand another person's perspective and then being tender toward them, not because they deserve it, but because you allow compassion to replace judgment. Who will you be kind to today?
"Let all that you do be done in love."
- 1 Corinthians 16:14
When you read this, you probably think about hearts and flowers and all the symbols that come from the word "love." It's our every moment, walking around parts of life that need to hear this. Today, don't just let your warm, heart-filled moments in life be filled with love. Let love become a part of the everyday, mundane tasks. You'll see a difference.
